The old adage when it comes to relief pitchers is “Don’t pay for saves.” But if you MUST, there are definitely some relief pitchers out there that are sure bets to be a team’s closer throughout the entire season, no matter what happens.

Catcher is by far the weakest offensive position in all of fantasy baseball. However, you may be surprised to know that Joe Mauer is NOT ranked the top catcher in 2011. Instead, that honor goes to a player who has rejoined the AL Central.

Last year was the so-called “Year of the Pitcher.” No-hitters and perfect games were common occurrences. There’s no doubt that starting pitcher is the deepest position in fantasy baseball in 2011. Former Cy Young Award winners are littered everywhere and will be available in the later rounds of fantasy drafts.

Yeah you know about the Ryan Brauns and Josh Hamiltons, but outfield is a position that has great value in the later stages of fantasy drafts (think Carlos Gonzalez last year). There are always cheap sources of almost every category available in the outfield, and many players that go undrafted could be the next hot waiver wire add at any moment.

Evan Longoria is now the #1 ranked third baseman in fantasy baseball, no questions asked. Alex Rodriguez had a good run as the top 3B, but Longo is now the future. He is undoubtedly worth a first round selection, especially considering the talent pool at third is shallow.

Shortstop is usually the position you want to grab cheap sources of steals and batting average and some runs as well. However, two names rank atop the position this year and both should be first round draft picks come draft time. Our staff #1 overall shortstop may slightly surprise you.

Second base is one of the weakest positions in all of fantasy baseball. After the first ten players or so, it is almost a crapshoot to figure out which second baseman will break out next. Nonetheless, we have ranked our top second basemen for 2011.
