2010 featured one of the more unpredictable World Cups in recent memory. Numerous teams and players that are constant participators when it comes to the latter rounds of the tournament bowed out earlier than anticipated. Wayne Rooney, Kaká, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Lionel Messi are just a few players that normally compete and succeed at a premiere level. And now the accumulation of all the courageous performances and drama has left us with two teams that rightfully deserve their current standing. Whichever team emerges victorious will have won their first World Cup in history.

Uruguay vs. Netherlands

[column width="45%" padding="3%"]

Uruguay

If there ever was a team that could attribute their success to pure luck, it is the 2010 Uruguayan national squad. With time literally on the verge of expiring in overtime, Uruguay forward Luis Suárez prevented a Ghana header from realizing the back of the net by knocking the ball away with his hands. Subsequently, Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan grazed his penalty kick off the top of the crossbar, sending the match into a shootout, which ended in a Uruguay victory. As a consequence of his heroic reflexes, Suárez earned a red card and will miss Uruguay’s semifinals match against Netherlands. His loss comes as a major blow to a Uruguay attack that relies on Suárez to finish strongly in the box. Specifically, Diego Forlán will carry a heavier burden in the attacking third, as Suárez has served as Forlán’s primary aid throughout the tournament. The player that must step up the most in Suárez’s absence is Edinson Cavani on the wing. However, if past performance is any indicator of future success, Cavani will again struggle to find his touch. In recent matches, Cavani’s runs have been suppressed rather easily due to his questionable dribbling. This trend must be reversed if Uruguay hopes to upset the Netherlands.

Uruguay vs. Ghana

[column width="45%" padding="3%"]

Uruguay

Uruguay displayed a useful blend of penetrative offense and suppressing defense in their Round of 16 match against South Korea. However, both of these attributes were not present the entire match, as Uruguay seemed blatantly complacent once they advanced to a 1-0 lead. Uruguay boasts solid defenders, but they can only hold off a full-on attack for so long. Uruguay is too reliant on Diego Forlán to maintain possession in the midfield and on the attack. Midfielders Diego Pérez and Edinson Cavani must display better control of the ball, allowing Forlán to focus on creating his own chances or setting up Luis Suárez in the box. When Forlán and Suárez are given the opportunity to focus on creating chances in the box, Uruguay is at their absolute best.
