Thinking Lakers and Celtics in the NBA Finals? Think Again!

Those who are thinking the Los Angeles Lakers are going to face the Boston Celtics in a rematch of the 2008 NBA Finals have another thing coming. I can understand the argument of the Lakers being the best team in the Western Conference right now and the Celtics being a veteran powerhouse team when healthy, but neither team will be making it to the big dance this year.

Instead, the 2010 NBA Finals are going to feature two of the top three picks from the 2003 NBA Draft. Now hopefully most of you are not thinking of the name Darko Milicic. Lebron James and Carmelo Anthony are going to lead their respective teams to the NBA Finals this year.

Don’t believe me?

Just look at the stats this season. The Cavaliers are 42-11 and looking much stronger than any of their competition in the Eastern Conference. LeBron James is arguably the best player the game has ever seen and the Diesel, a proven winner, is in the middle. The possibility of Cleveland adding Amar’e Stoudemire before the trading deadline would make this Cavs team the most dangerous team in the entire NBA (if it isn’t already), even though they can definitely make the finals without Stoudemire.

The Denver Nuggets still have to hold up their end of this prediction. The way Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups can run the offense together, I think this is the year they can overcome the powerhouse Lakers and squeak by in a 7 game series. The Nuggets have proven this season that they can match the Lakers, as they are 3-1 against them (the only loss in the preseason). The Nuggets are also the best team in the West when it comes to beating teams over .500, as they are 23-8 against the real talent of the league.

As far as the other teams in the league who have a possibility of making the finals, let’s start in the East. The Orlando Magic and Atlanta Hawks are too inconsistent with their play to make it to the Finals, and the Celtics are not going to stay healthy enough, or young enough, to even make it to the Eastern Conference Finals.

In the West, the Dallas Mavericks and Utah Jazz have good records and look sharp, but both have barely broke even with their record against teams with a .500 or better record. The Lakers, the perennial favorites, have been as good as advertised. Los Angeles just has match-up problems against Denver and Denver just seems to have the Lakers number this season, and will show it in the Western Conference Finals.

One thing is for sure – this year’s playoffs will be one of the better postseasons we have seen in the NBA in recent years. In the end, I see the Cavaliers and Nuggets in this year’s NBA Finals, with the Cavaliers pulling it off (finally) for the city of Cleveland in 6 games. I know there are not going to be a lot of people to agree with this prediction, but let’s wait and see until June, shall we?

Agreed. I was just thinking the other day that it’s not going to be the Lakers we face in the Finals. Didn’t realize Denver was 3-1 over them this season. Cavs all the way!

Do you know that going into the 2009-2010 season, the Lakers maintain the record for having the most wins and the best winning percentage (3000 and 61.8%)

I agree the Lakers are a great team, and I am aware they have the best winning percentage, but just because you have the best winning percentage does not win you championships automatically. As much as it hurts to say this, ask the 2008 Patriots about winning percentages. They had a winning percentage of 1.000 going into the superbowl, but ran into a team that matched up well with them. Thats exactly what the Nuggets will do to them in the playoffs. Also, to top it all off with percentages, the Nuggets winning percentage against the Lakers this season is .750%. Thanks for the insight, keep it coming.

I admit Denver let me down and Lebron’s team did not play up to the standards I expected, I apologize to all my followers. The Lakers and Celtics have really shown me that they were able to mature and get better and healthy for the playoffs. I did however go out on a limb with my picks a bit and I was wrong, but it has been a well played playoffs and continue to see some good games these last few weeks.
