Maurice Jones-Drew vs. Michael Turner

Jones-Drew

Maurice Jones-Drew has been amazing since coming into the NFL in 2006. Although he’s very undersized for a running back in the league, MoJo uses it to his advantage. He’s one of the best receivers out of the backfield in the league. One thing he has on Michael Turner is that Jones-Drew is the focal point of the team’s offense; he led the NFL in redzone carries in 2009, making him even more of a fantasy stud. It also helps that David Garrard doesn’t really have a go-to-guy at receiver. In Atlanta, Turner has to share the touches with Roddy White and Tony Gonzalez who both have the chance to get 100 receptions. Turner is definitely a tough back, but Jones-Drew has shown he can be consistent. After a strong 2008, Turner had a disappointing 2009. In every year Jones-Drew has been in the league, he has not had less than 9 TDs in any season. Last year was his first season as the feature-back with Fred Taylor going off to New England and Jones-Drew responded with 1,391 yards, 4.5 ypc and 15 TDs. The big thing for Jones-Drew is that he’s very durable. He has not missed significant time in any season in his career due to injury. There’s a lot of potential for Jones-Drew this season. He has the chance for 2,000 combined yards (rushing and receiving) and 20+ TDs. If you are in a PPR league, you have to love his potential with receptions. Depending on how weak the receivers play this season for the Jaguars, Jones-Drew could have 50+ catches in that offense. Although Turner is a solid player, he is not as polished as Maurice Jones-Drew.

Turner

Michael ” The Burner” Turner was once known as one of the top two fantasy running backs in football. In 2008, Turner signed with the Atlanta Falcons and was finally given the opportunity to overcome the shadow of LaDainian Tomlinson. He took advantage of the opportunity by rushing for 1,700 yards and 17 touchdowns. Turner fell from grace in 2009 when an injury caused him to miss five games. Even though he only played in eleven games, his numbers reveal he was still one of the elite running backs as he was on pace to rush for 1,200 yards and 15 touchdowns. Michael Turner as being look upon as if he is on the decline but that is not the case. The Falcons were able to keep a strong offensive line together and Tony Gonzalez will be used in more blocking situations when Turner carries the ball this season. Turner is only 28 years old and has quite a bit left in the tank, and is ready to show he has not lost a step due to his injury. He still has great speed and when he hits an open hole, defenders should watch out. One thing he will be working on is catching the ball out of the backfield, which will help him become more versatile and dangerous. Now as good as Jones-Drew is, last season was his first rushing for over 1,000 yards. He is a good back that is going to have some good games, but the offensive line is not as solid at the tackle position and teams are going to stack up against the run and wait for David Garrard to beat them. Expect Jones-Drew to possibly show signs of fatigue as he was the featured back for the first time last season, and taking on the full load two seasons in a row without help should start to break MJD down. It will be a close battle between the two throughout the season, but expect Turner to end the season strong and become one of the top four backs in football.

So, who you got?
