Philip Rivers vs. Tony Romo

Rivers

Philip Rivers is one of the premier quarterbacks in the league. He has a great delivery and at 6’ 5”, he has a big advantage compared to other quarterbacks. Rivers throws a very accurate ball and has both short and deep accuracy. He has great touch on his passes and can throw a nice fade or a ball into the flats to a running back like he did when Tomlinson was there. He makes good decisions out there and keeps the interceptions low. He likes to spread the ball around to all his receivers, backs and big TE (Antonio Gates). He’s a very confident, sometimes cocky player and believes he can fit the ball wherever he wants, and for the most part he can fit the ball through anything. He’s a good game manager, and now with the emergence of another threat in Vincent Jackson to go with Antonio Gates, look for his number to grow in 2010. Tony Romo may have thrown for more yards in 2009, but Rivers had two more touchdowns and a better QB rating. Romo had a solid 97.6 rating, while Rivers had an unbelievable 104.4 rating. The thing about Romo is that he has a ton of weapons around him, Rivers has a couple in Gates and Jackson, but the rest of his targets are average at best. In comparing each of their career best seasons, Rivers in ’08 and Romo in ’07, Rivers has the edge. Although Romo had more yards and touchdowns by a small margin, Rivers had a better QB rating and eight less interceptions, a key fantasy statistic. Rivers also edged him in completion percentage. Both of these men are great quarterbacks, but if I had the game and fantasy championship on the line, I would want Rivers without a doubt.

Romo

Tony Romo or Philip Rivers? River is nice, but here’s why Romo is superior. The Chargers lost several key players on defense this year. Although they did manage to refill their offensive losses, they did not address the defensive side. This could result in less time on the field for Rivers. Rivers’ success will also be partly dependent on rookie running back Ryan Mathews. If Mathews can’t find his rhythm, then it could be tough for Rivers to put up big numbers against defenses designed to stop him. It’s the opposite for Romo. His offensive line is improved without Flozell Adams and the Cowboy running game has been consistent for years. They also added the best and most NFL-ready wide receiver in the draft in Dez Bryant. Dallas also chose to hang on to former Pro-Bowler Roy Williams. Couple them with current number one wideout Miles Austin and superstar tight end Jason Witten, Romo has more than enough weapons to lead fantasy teams. Romo was better than Rivers down the stretch last year, something he will probably carry into this season. Romo threw for over 300 yards in 5 of the last 8 games and one of the top passers when playing indoors. He has 11 games indoors this year and he’ll take full advantage of it. With the suspension of Vincent Jackson and Marcus McNeill’s holdout still ongoing, Rivers could be going into the 2010 season with someone new protecting his blind side. There are just simply too many question marks with the Chargers offense.

So, who you got?

I have to go with Romo based on the arguments above, plus the fact that he is no where near as annoying as Rivers. I hate owning a player that you really just want to root against. That is where I would be as a Rivers owner.
